Our Mission
It is the mission of the Middletown Fire Protection District to safely, efficiently and economically, provide quality caring service to those who live, work, and visit our community; which will minimize the loss of life and destruction of property through education, prevention and mitigation of hazardous situations with professionally trained and competent personnel.

Who We Are
The Middletown Fire Protection District is a combination fire department, made up of 25 Volunteer and 41 Career Firefighters, both male and female. Our Firefighters either live or work in our district and come from all walks of life. Every member is vital to our mission.

The Middletown Fire Protection District has three modern fire stations that house some of the most sophisticated equipment considered necessary for today's firefighting demands. Four engines, a 102' aerial ladder truck, one field fire unit, and seven service vehicles make up the fleet of equipment that can be pressed into service within minutes to serve those in need.

Our Training Facility, located on a six acre site at 1350 North English Station Road, is equipped with a five story drill tower, flammable liquids training area, residential burn simulator, vehicle extrication training area as well as a driving course and pump test pit. A small trailer serves as a classroom for up to 12 students.

The district encompasses an area whose boundaries are roughly defined as I-64 on the south, Hurstbourne Parkway on the west, LaGrange Road on the north and Beckley Station Road on the east.

What We Do
By way of radio page issued by the Jefferson County Fire Alarm Office, all Firefighters are notified of the call for help and respond to their assigned fire station. Chief officers respond directly to the fire scene of the emergency, examine its severity and direct incoming fire trucks. The Firefighter, upon arrival at the fire station will don appropriate protective clothing and equipment, board specified fire trucks and respond to the scene of the emergency. Once at the scene, the Firefighter may be required to perform rescue operations, advance hose lines, raise ladders and ventilate structures, operate a pumper or perform other tasks as directed by the Incident Commander and Company Officers in charge.

There are 18 volunteer fire districts in Jefferson County, of which six surround Middletown. If additional assistance is required, "mutual-aid" agreements exists among these districts.

The Middletown Fire Protection District is organized in accordance with the Kentucky Revised Statutes Chapter 75. Chapter 75 specifies the laws which pertains to the operation of a fire protection district. A fire district is governed by seven Trustees, 2 elected by the community property holders, 2 elected by the firefighters and 3 appointed by the County Judge/Executive. The district is funded by taxes from real and personal property at the rate of $.10 per $100 of property valuation. This tax is collected by the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office and is part of your Jefferson County Tax Bill which is mailed out each fall. The vehicle tax is collected by the Jefferson County Clerk's Office at the time you renew your license plates. The tax code for Middletown is 13 and should appear on your tax bills. If it is not, and you live in the District, please contact us for assistance in correcting your bill so your tax dollars serve you.

The support functions such as administration, fire prevention inspections and public education, training, vehicle, facility and hydrant maintenance are performed by our staff of Firefighters. These Firefighters respond on all calls during the work day, Monday through Friday 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM, as well as the available Volunteer Firefighters. Calls that occur after normal business hours are performed primarily by the Volunteer Firefighters with assistance from three fulltime crews. Station One and Two have 4 persons assigned 24 hours a day, and Station Three has 3 persons assigned.

Training sessions are held once a week. For those individuals who are unable to attend regular evening training, day time sessions are held. In addition, Firefighters may sign up for special schools and classes conducted periodically by county, state or municipal agencies.

Carrying On A Proud Tradition
From its humble beginnings in 1940, when the department only had one fire truck and was housed in space donated by the Middletown Civic Club, the Middletown Fire Protection District has progressed to the point where it has now earned a "second class" insurance rating. This distinction is extremely rare for a volunteer fire district, and one that is shared by only a handful of volunteer fire districts across the entire nation.

Since public safety is of prime importance, approximately 50% of our Firefighters have extended their capabilities and become state certified Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT's). Having completed a minimum of 131 hours of intensive training, these individuals are qualified in life support techniques, first aid, automobile rescue and yes, even delivering babies.
